Walt spoke at Clark University in April 2013. In 2012, Walt took part in a panel at the one-state solution conference at the Kennedy School, along with Ali Abunimah and Eve Spangler. He spoke at the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies at Columbia University in 2010. Walt was elected a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in May 2005. Walt was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where his father, a physicist, worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
